In this module, we will discuss trauma, including its causes ranging from blunt trauma, such as a motor vehicle accident, to penetrating trauma, such as a gun-shot wound. You will learn how to take a quick “bullet history” using the AMPLE mnemonic and how to proceed in managing a patient presenting with a life-threatening injury. You will learn how to perform and interpret a primary and secondary survey and how to manage patients based on your results. You will learn how to interpret clinical signs, including how to recognize and treat pneumothoraces, hemothoraces, flail chest, and other pathologies resulting from trauma. Finally, you will learn the appropriate way to identify the main causes of bleeding and how to identify and treat the different classes of shock.
