In this module, we will take you through an approach to evaluating sleep disorders. You will develop a thorough understanding of the three common clinical presentations of sleep disorders, namely insomnia, parasomnia, and excessive daytime sleepiness, and how to evaluate patients for each of these. In particular, you will learn how to take a detailed sleep history, including asking questions about onset of sleep and any abnormal behaviours during sleep, and will gain an understanding about the associations between existing medical conditions and sleep complaints. Investigations used to evaluate sleep complaints, such as polysomnography, will also be discussed. Lastly, you will learn the management of some common conditions, such as restless leg syndrome, narcolepsy, and circadian rhythm disorders.
