In this module, we will take you through an approach to pediatric respiratory distress. You will learn about the signs and symptoms associated with upper airway obstruction and lower airway obstruction, and the importance of differentiating between the two. Critical questions to ask in history, including duration and trigger, severity, and previous therapeutic attempts will be reviewed, as will physical findings, which include tachypnea, accessory muscle use, and wheezes and crackles on auscultation. Lastly, you will learn a comprehensive diagnostic approach to and management of some common but potentially serious conditions causing respiratory distress in the pediatric population, such as asthma, bronchiolitis, croup, and pneumonia.
