Course Objectives

In this module, we will discuss how to approach a patient presenting with non-articular musculoskeletal pain. Critical questions to ask your patient, including whether the pain is localized or diffuse and the specific characteristics of the pain, will be reviewed. The specifics to look for on physical exam, which include erythema and swelling on inspection, range of movement restrictions, and soft tissue tenderness, will also be reviewed. Lastly, you will learn to organize non-articular musculoskeletal pain as either localized or diffuse and acute or chronic and will learn a comprehensive diagnostic approach to and management of some common conditions causing non-articular musculoskeletal pain, such as rotator cuff tendonitis, polymyalgia rheumatica, and fibromyalgia.
