Course Objectives

In this module, we will discuss the approach to a patient with alopecia. In addition to an overview of the hair growth cycle, you will gain an understanding of the clinical characteristics that differentiate scarring and non-scarring alopecias. Critical questions to ask in history, including whether hair loss was acute or gradual and whether hair loss is localized or generalized, will be reviewed. The clinical significance of findings on physical examination, such as tufting and bald patches on scalp, and the importance of scalp biopsies in evaluating a patient with alopecia will also be discussed. Lastly, you will learn about the management of some common types of alopecias, such as androgenetic alopecia and primary scarring alopecia.
