Course Objectives

The learner will acquire knowledge in history taking regarding the patient presenting with acute visual loss as well as recognize physical findings such as temporal tenderness, cherry-red spot on ophthalmoscopy, and macular hemorrhage. The learner will be able to apply a comprehensive approach, identify when to refer to specialists, and describe the treatment options for conditions such as macular degeneration, giant cell arteritis, and retinal detachment. Finally, the learner will be able to recognize clinical conditions that can be lethal, including giant cell arteritis, and those that require emergent evaluation and management to prevent permanent damage, including retinal detachment, wet macular degeneration, and angle closure glaucoma.
